Classic Manhattan

Here’s a classic Manhattan cocktail recipe. It’s bourbon, or rye if you choose, with a combination of dry and sweet vermouth and a dash of bitters, garnished with a cherry.

Manhattan

Serves 2

2 ounces whiskey (rye is traditional; bourbon is common too)
½ ounce sweet vermouth
½ ounce dry vermouth
2 to 3 dashes Angostura bitters
ice

Garnish
Amarena cherry or orange peel

Directions

  1. Add whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters to a shaker.

  2. Fill with ice and stir until well chilled, about 20–30 seconds.

  3. Strain into a chilled coupe for straight up Manhattan or in a rocks glass with ice.

  4. Garnish with a cherry or a twist of orange peel.

Note: Rather than Angostura, you can experiment with orange bitters for a brighter profile.
